Builder Scams
What are they?

There are a number of things you can do to try and avoid being scammed or spot red flags

  • Work specification

    Begin with a work specification and make sure it includes who is removing all the rubbish after the work (as scammers will often charge extra for that).

  • Get recommendations

    Get recommendations from family and friends if they’ve had work done.

  • Obtain quotes

    Obtain at least three quotes. Make sure all builders visit the house and cover all the same things.

  • Ask for references

    Ask for several references in your area and visit them to see the work.

  • Discuss payment

    Discuss payment and get a clear idea of what is paid when along the way.

  • Get a breakdown of costs

    Be wary of paying too much upfront. If they quote a large amount up front for materials, get a breakdown of the materials cost. If concerned, you can even get “labour only” quotes where you pay for the materials yourself.

  • Draft up an agreement

    Draft up an agreement with the builder in advance and ensure that a significant amount is paid after the work is completed.
